A Schengen visa is applied for at the mission of the country where you will spend the most nights, or the main purpose of the trip. Applying at the wrong mission is refused outright. The visa allows 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole area, not 90 days per country.

What to prepare

A filled dot is required, a hollow one is asked for sometimes. This list is for your situation, so it is shorter than a generic checklist.

Identity

  • National ID or birth certificate

A copy of your NID. For an applicant under 18, the birth certificate instead.

  • Original passport

Your machine-readable passport, valid at least six months beyond your travel dates, with at least two blank pages.

  • Passport bio-page copy

A clear colour copy or scan of the photo page.

  • Passport-size photographs

Recent photographs on a plain white background. Confirm the exact size the mission asks for; it is not the same everywhere.

  • Previous passportsif asked

Old passports showing your travel history. This is some of the strongest evidence that you come back.

Travel and application

  • Accommodation booking

Bookings covering every night of the trip, or the host address if you are staying privately.

  • Completed application form

Filled in, signed and dated. Online forms have to be submitted and the confirmation printed.

  • Cover letter

One page: who you are, why you are travelling, your dates, and who is paying for the trip.

  • Day-by-day itinerary

What you are doing on each day, with cities and dates.

  • Flight reservation

A confirmed booking, not a paid ticket. Do not buy the ticket before the visa is issued.

  • Travel medical insurance

Cover for the whole trip. Schengen missions require at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover.

  • Invitation letterif asked

From the company, host or relative you are visiting, with their contact details and their status in the country.

Money

  • Bank solvency certificate

A certificate from your bank stating your closing balance, issued within the last month.

  • Bank statement, last six months

Original and bank-stamped, covering six months. Missions look for a steady balance, not a lump sum deposited last week.

  • Tax return or TIN certificate

Your latest income tax return acknowledgement receipt.

What you do

Every tourist visa asks how you support yourself and why you are expected back.

  • Client contracts or work orders

Signed agreements or invoices showing work that is ongoing.

  • Company bank statement, six months

Bank-stamped statement for the business account.

  • Leave permission from your institution

Written permission to be away for the travel dates.

  • No-objection and leave letter

From your employer, confirming your approved leave dates and that you are expected back at work.

  • Pension or retirement proof

Your pension book, PPO, or the letter confirming your retirement benefit.

  • Proof of freelance income

Remittance advices or platform earnings statements that match the credits in your bank statement.

  • Salary certificate

On company letterhead, stating your position, joining date and monthly salary.

  • Student ID and enrolment letter

A letter from your institution confirming that you are enrolled.

  • Trade licence

Your current trade licence, with an English translation.

  • Employee ID card copyif asked

A copy of your office identity card.

  • Incorporation documentsif asked

Memorandum and articles, or the partnership deed, together with the company TIN.

Sponsor

  • Sponsor bank statement, six months

Bank-stamped statement for the sponsor account.

  • Sponsor ID and relationship proof

The sponsor NID or passport copy, plus a document showing how you are related.

  • Sponsor letter

From whoever is paying for the trip, stating the relationship and exactly what they are covering.

Legal

  • Marriage certificateif asked

Nikahnama or marriage certificate with an English translation, when you travel with a spouse or rely on a spouse income.

  • Parental consent and birth certificateif asked

For an applicant under 18 travelling without both parents: notarised consent from the parent who is not travelling.

Worth knowing

  • For a multi-country Schengen trip, apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or the main purpose of the trip. Applying at the wrong mission is refused.
