Best time to go
Spring (April-May, cherry blossoms then fresh green) and autumn (late September-early November, ginkgo gold and maple fire) are Korea at its photogenic peak: book Jeju and Seoul beds early in those windows. Summer (July-August) is hot, humid and monsoon-streaked, but festivals (Boryeong Mud Festival) and Jeju beaches push through. Winter is cold, dry and clear: skiing in Pyeongchang country, street-food steam, and palaces dusted in snow: genuinely lovely if you pack layers. Chuseok and Lunar New Year (dates shift) close family-run spots and jam transport; plan around them.

Getting around
KTX high-speed trains hit Busan from Seoul in under 3 hours; book via Korail's app or a Korail Pass for multi-leg trips. Get a T-money card (any convenience store, works nationwide) for subways, buses and even taxis. Seoul's metro is vast, cheap and signed in English: transfers are sport. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map (Google Maps can't route properly here) and Kakao T for taxis. Intercity buses are excellent for everywhere trains miss; Jeju needs a budget flight (30+ daily) plus rental car or buses on-island. Late-night transit ends ~midnight; taxis surge mildly after.
Money and staying connected
The Korean won (KRW) comes in big numbers: ₩10,000 ≈ a casual meal. Cards are accepted nearly universally (even street stalls increasingly), but keep ₩20-30k cash for markets and temple donations. No tipping: genuinely none, it can confuse. ATMs marked "Global" take foreign cards (convenience stores reliable). SIMs/eSIMs (SK Telecom, KT, LG U+) offer unlimited-data tourist plans; Wi-Fi is everywhere and fast. Translation: Papago beats Google for Korean. Tax refunds for tourists are instant at many shops with a passport.
Culture and etiquette
Hierarchy and warmth coexist: a slight bow with greetings, two hands for giving/receiving (cards, drinks, change), and never pour your own drink: fill your partner's glass and they'll fill yours (turn slightly away from elders when drinking, classic respect). Shoes off in homes, hanok stays and some restaurants. Don't stick chopsticks upright in rice; don't blow your nose at the table. Couples culture is adorable and public; PDA beyond that stays mild. Useful phrases: "Annyeonghaseyo" (hello), "Gamsahamnida" (thank you), "Juseyo" (please give me), "Eolmayeyo?" (how much?), "Jal meokkessumnida" (said before eating). Trash sorting is serious: follow the bins.
Health and safety
Korea's safety culture is remarkable: lost phones get returned, streets feel calm at 3am, and solo travelers consistently rate it top-tier. Watch the small stuff: scooters on sidewalks, aggressive bus-stop dashes, and soju's deceptive smoothness. Tap water is safe though most drink filtered. Summer monsoon brings flash downpours; yellow-dust/fine-dust days (spring) bother sensitive lungs: locals check apps and mask up. Pharmacies (yakguk) are everywhere; basic meds need the pharmacist, not shelves.
