April-May and September-October are the country-wide sweet spots: mild in Beijing, green in Guilin, golden in Yunnan. Avoid the two national holiday crushes - Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) and Golden Week (first week of October) - when half a billion people travel and sights become rivers. Summer is hot and busy (Beijing 35ยฐC, Yangtze cities steamier) but fine at altitude in Yunnan; winter is harsh north (and magical for Harbin's Ice Festival, Dec-Feb) while Guangxi and Yunnan stay mild. Book trains ~2 weeks ahead in any peak.

Getting around
High-speed rail is the superpower: 350km/h, city-center to city-center, book with your passport via the 12306 app or major travel platforms (ID checks at every station - arrive 45 min early). Metro systems in every big city are cheap, signed in English and QR-ticketed. DiDi (ride-hailing) works with international cards inside Alipay; street taxis want the destination written in Chinese. Domestic flights cover the far west efficiently. Within sights, official shuttles and cable cars are well-run. Note: Google Maps is unreliable - use Amap/Apple Maps offline plus your hotel's name card in Chinese.
Money & connectivity
China runs on phone payments: link your international Visa/Mastercard to Alipay (and/or WeChat Pay) before arrival - it now works for foreigners and handles everything from trains to street fruit. Carry some yuan (CNY) cash as backup for rural stalls; big-city POS card acceptance is improving at hotels but not universal. Tipping isn't practiced. Connectivity: the Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram - install a reputable VPN AND offline maps/translators beforehand; a foreign eSIM with roaming sidesteps blocks neatly. Hotel Wi-Fi is fast but filtered without your VPN.
Health & safety
Violent crime against tourists is genuinely rare - solo women routinely call China their easiest big country. Practical cautions: traffic (scooters ignore physics - look every direction), tourist-area teahouse/"art student" scams in Beijing/Shanghai (decline charming invitations to mystery venues), and counterfeit notes from informal money changers (use ATMs). Tap water is not for drinking - boil or bottle; street food from busy stalls is usually safer than empty restaurants. Air quality varies; check AQI in winter up north. Pharmacies are everywhere; carry medicine names in Chinese. Emergencies: 110 police, 120 ambulance.

Culture & etiquette
China is informal, loud and deeply courteous in its own grammar: queues compress, voices carry, and none of it is hostility. Receive business cards, gifts and change with two hands; never stick chopsticks upright in rice; refuse a gift once before accepting. Saving face matters - correct people privately, praise publicly. Hot water is the default drink and a kindness. Politics, Taiwan/Tibet/Xinjiang: listen more than you opine. Useful phrases: "Nว hวo" (hello), "Xiรจxie" (thank you), "Duลshวo qiรกn?" (how much?), "Tร i hวo le!" (great!), "Mวidฤn" (the bill). A translation app turns every interaction friendly.
