Money and staying connected

The Saudi riyal (SAR) is pegged to the US dollar (~3.75), which keeps budgeting predictable. Cards, Apple Pay and mada terminals are everywhere: Saudi is nearly cashless in cities, though souqs and small eateries may still prefer cash. Tipping isn't traditional but 10% is appreciated in restaurants; check for service charges. SIMs/eSIMs from stc, Mobily or Zain are fast and cheap with passport registration at the airport. Culture and etiquette

Hospitality is sacred: expect dates and qahwa (cardamom coffee) offered everywhere: take the cup with your right hand. Visitors no longer need abayas, but modest dress (covered shoulders/knees, loose fits) is right almost everywhere; shops and sites pause briefly at prayer times. Public affection is a no; segregated "family" sections are fading but still appear. During Ramadan, eat and drink indoors by day out of courtesy. Useful phrases: "As-salamu alaykum" (greetings), "Shukran" (thank you), "Min fadlak" (please), "Kam hadha?" (how much?), "Yalla" (let's go). Friday midday is mosque time: plan a slow start.

Health and safety

Saudi cities are among the safest you'll visit: petty crime is rare and violent crime against tourists rarer; the real risks are heat and the road. Hydrate aggressively, schedule desert activities for early/late hours, and never hike midday in summer. Driving is fast and assertive; ride-hail at night rather than walking unlit highways. Tap water is treated but most drink bottled. Pharmacies are modern and everywhere; travel insurance is bundled with the eVisa. Strictly no alcohol or drugs: penalties are severe. Respect photography rules around government sites and ask before photographing people.
