About Armenia
Armenia wears its age openly. This was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion (301 AD), and the proof is carved into the landscape: monasteries wedged onto gorge edges, into caves, and onto plateaus that have watched empires pass for seventeen centuries. Yerevan, the rose-tuff capital, is older than Rome - and yet it runs on a thoroughly modern cafรฉ-and-jazz pulse, with Mount Ararat (just over the closed Turkish border, but Armenia's eternal symbol) floating snow-capped above the skyline on clear mornings. The country is small and dense with wonder. Lake Sevan glitters at altitude with peninsula churches and fish shacks, while Dilijan's forests earn the "Armenian Switzerland" nickname. May-June and September-October are ideal: wildflower or golden-leaf landscapes, comfortable Yerevan terrace weather, and clear Ararat views (the mountain hides behind summer haze, so spring and autumn mornings are your best shot). July-August is hot in the lowlands (32ยฐC+ in Yerevan) but perfect at Lake Sevan and in the forested north - locals decamp to Dilijan and Jermuk. Winter (December-March) brings skiing at Tsaghkadzor and snow-draped monasteries, deeply atmospheric but cold; some high mountain roads close. Getting around
Marshrutkas (shared minivans) are the cheap, characterful backbone - they leave when full from Yerevan's Kilikia and other stations for every town, though schedules are loose and luggage space optimistic. For monastery-hopping, hiring a driver for the day (or splitting a tour) is the sane move - many sights are off transit routes and a half-day with a car costs little split between two. Yerevan itself has a tidy single-line metro, buses and cheap, plentiful taxis (use the GG or Yandex apps to skip haggling). Roads are decent on main routes, rougher to remote monasteries; winter mountain driving needs care. The Yerevan-Tbilisi (Georgia) overnight train and frequent marshrutkas make a Caucasus combo easy.
Money & connectivity
Armenia uses the dram (AMD). Cards work in Yerevan hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, but cash rules in the regions, marshrutkas, markets and small monastery-town cafรฉs - carry small notes (ATMs everywhere in cities; decline conversion). Tipping ~10% in restaurants is now common. SIMs/eSIMs (Team/Ucom, Viva-MTS) are cheap with big data and surprisingly good rural coverage; EU roaming does NOT apply - go local. Wi-Fi is widespread in Yerevan cafรฉs. Brandy and Areni wine are the souvenirs locals actually rate - buy at the source. Many guesthouses are cash-only and feed you a multi-course breakfast you didn't budget for.
Health & safety
Armenia is one of the safer countries you'll travel - violent crime against visitors is rare and solo travelers consistently feel at ease, day or night, in Yerevan. The genuine cautions are roads (assertive driving, variable rural surfaces - avoid night highway runs) and mountain weather, which turns fast above 2,000m. Tap water in Yerevan is famously good (the city's fountains, pulpulaks, are drinkable); rural sources are usually fine but bottle if unsure. Pharmacies are well-stocked. Note the geopolitics: the borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, and the area near the Azerbaijani frontier (including some southern roads) can be tense - check current advisories and avoid border zones. Culture & etiquette
Armenian hospitality is intense and sincere - a guest is a gift from God in the old saying, and you'll feel it in the relentless feeding, the homemade oghi (fruit vodka) toasts, and the refusal to let you pay. Toasts are an art led by a tamada; drink at the toast, honor parents and peace early. Churches and monasteries are living: dress modestly (cover shoulders/knees; women may want a scarf), keep quiet, light a candle. The 1915 Genocide is the defining national wound - approach with respect and listening. Useful phrases: "Barev dzez" (hello), "Shnorhakalutyun" (thank you - "merci" also works colloquially), "Khndrem" (please/you're welcome), "Inch arzhe?" (how much?), "Kenats!" (cheers). Compliment the brandy and you've made a friend for life.
