Know before you go

The practical stuff every traveler needs - weather, safety, costs and how to get around.

Best time to visit

May to October is the dry season and the easiest time to travel and tour the salt flats. After the rains, around February, the flats flood into a giant mirror. Nights at altitude are cold year-round, so pack warm layers.

Safety tips

  • Acclimatize slowly - La Paz and the Altiplano sit very high
  • Use registered ride-hailing apps at night rather than hailing on the street
  • Carry a copy of your ID and leave the original in your accommodation safe
  • Traveling with a verified partner adds an easy extra layer of safety

Accommodation & daily budget

Hostel dorm
$6-12/ night
Budget hotel / guesthouse
$15-30/ night
Mid-range hotel
$40-75/ night
Meals (per day)
$5-12

Splitting a twin room and transport with a partner can cut your daily costs by 30-40%.

Getting around & useful apps

Buses connect the main cities cheaply, with flights useful for the longer or higher routes. Salt-flat trips are done by 4x4 with a local operator.
