June-August is lake-cottage summer: midnight sun in Lapland, 25°C south-coast days, festivals (Flow, Savonlinna opera in a castle) and berry-picking everywhere. Getting around
VR trains are comfortable and punctual: Helsinki-Rovaniemi runs as the beloved double-decker Santa Claus Express overnight (book cabins early in winter). Long-distance buses (Matkahuolto, Onnibus) fill every gap cheaply. Helsinki transport (HSL app) covers trams, metro and the Suomenlinna ferry on one ticket. In Lapland, packages include transfers: otherwise rent a car with proper winter tires (standard equipment by law in season) and drive gently: reindeer own the roads and dusk is collision hour. Summer cottage trips usually want a car; EV charging is widespread. Domestic flights reach Ivalo/Kittilä when the night train doesn't fit.
Money and staying connected
Finland is a euro country and effectively cashless: card/phone for everything from market berries to sauna lockers. Tipping isn't expected anywhere; rounding up is a gesture, not a duty. Alcohol beyond mid-strength sells through Alko (closed Sundays): plan the cottage stock-up. SIMs/eSIMs (Elisa, DNA, Telia) offer truly unlimited data cheaply: Finland basically invented that; EU plans roam free. Coverage persists shockingly deep into Lapland, but download offline maps for national parks anyway. Winter gear rental (thermal suits, boots) is standard with Lapland activities: don't over-buy before arriving.
Culture and etiquette
Finnish silence is comfort, not coldness: small talk is optional, honesty is total, and a Finn's word is a contract. Sauna etiquette: shower first, sit on a towel, nudity is normal and non-sexual (sessions usually split by gender among strangers), and the person nearest the stove throws the löyly steam: ask before dousing. Shoes off indoors, always. Personal space: arm's length minimum, bus-stop spacing is a national meme for a reason. Useful phrases: "Hei" (hi), "Kiitos" (thanks: the essential word), "Anteeksi" (sorry/excuse me), "Kippis!" (cheers), "Sisu", untranslatable grit; compliment a Finn's sisu and you've made a friend.
Health and safety
Finland tops global safety indexes; your risk management is thermal, not criminal. Winter Lapland at -25°C punishes casual clothing: layer properly, cover skin, and treat phone batteries as cold-mortal. Ice rules: never walk on lake/sea ice without marked routes or local confirmation. Summer brings world-champion mosquitoes in Lapland (head nets are dignity, not weakness) and ticks in the south. Sauna safely: hydrate, exit when dizzy, ease into avantouinti (ice swimming) with locals nearby. Tap water is among the world's purest. Pharmacies (apteekki) are excellent.
