Intercity buses are the workhorse - frequent Sofia-Plovdiv-Burgas links on comfortable coaches; trains (BDZ) are slower, cheaper and scenic (the Septemvri-Dobrinishte narrow-gauge through the mountains is a lovely anachronism). Sofia's metro is modern and airport-connected; trams and a tap-card cover the rest. For monasteries, Rhodope villages and coast-hopping, a rental car wins - roads are decent, a vignette is required, and drivers are assertive. Ride-hailing: Bolt and local TaxiMe beat hailing cabs (avoid unmetered "luxury" taxis at stations). Mountain access: chairlifts run summer schedules - verify before relying.

Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026, retiring the lev - no conversion games remain, and prices stay the EU's friendliest. Cards are widely accepted in cities and resorts; villages, monasterygift counters and mehanas may want cash - carry โฌ50 or so. Tipping ~10% in restaurants. SIMs/eSIMs (A1, Yettel, Vivacom) are cheap with strong coverage, including surprising mountain reach; EU plans roam free. ATMs: use bank-branded machines, decline conversion offers. Coastal resort menus sometimes price in "tourist" tiers - one street inland fixes everything.

Bulgaria is safer than its noir reputation - tourist crime is mostly Sunny Beach nightlife pickpocketing and occasional taxi overcharges (use apps). Roads deserve your real caution: aggressive overtaking and variable rural surfaces; drive defensively, especially at night. Mountain weather flips fast above 2,000m - the Rila lakes circuit needs layers and early starts; storms roll in by afternoon. Stray dogs exist - mostly indifferent; don't feed or provoke. Tap water is safe nationally (mountain fountains often superb). Pharmacies (ะฐะฟัะตะบะฐ) are plentiful; EU travelers carry EHIC/GHIC. Emergency number: 112.

Culture & etiquette
Bulgarian hospitality is fierce once engaged - expect rakia poured as punctuation and salads ordered "for the table". The infamous reversed gestures (nod = no, shake = yes) linger unevenly; say "da" (yes) or "ne" (no) aloud to be sure. Name days matter like birthdays; toasts ("Nazdrave!") come with eye contact. In churches and monasteries: shoulders/knees covered, candles bought inside, silence during services. Useful phrases: "Zdraveite" (hello), "Blagodarya" (thank you - or easier "mersi"), "Molya" (please), "Kolko struva?" (how much?), "Nazdrave!" (cheers). Refusing food twice is fine; three times means you'll be fed anyway.
