Getting around

There's no airport and no train inside the country: arrive by bus from Barcelona or Toulouse airports (~3h, frequent, comfortable - Andbus/Directbus), or drive. A car is handy valley-to-valley, though winter demands chains/winter tires and patience on the Envalira pass (the tunnel saves weather drama). National buses (L1-L6 lines) link every parish cheaply and reliably; ski-season shuttles loop the resorts. The capital conurbation walks end-to-end in 30 minutes. Taxis exist but distances are short. Crossing in/out: passport checks are light but real (Andorra is outside the EU/Schengen) - customs limits on duty-free hauls do get enforced on the French side.

Money & connectivity

Andorra uses the euro despite being outside the EU. Cards are universal in shops, resorts and restaurants; mountain refuges and some rural cafés prefer cash. Prices: lodging and lift passes undercut the Alps; dining sits between Spanish and French levels; fuel, tobacco and electronics are the famous duty-free draws. Tipping: 5-10% appreciated, never demanded. Connectivity catch: Andorra has its own operator (Andorra Telecom) and EU roaming plans do NOT cover it - buy a local eSIM/SIM or rely on ubiquitous hotel/resort Wi-Fi to dodge surprise bills. Coverage is excellent everywhere lifts go.

Health & safety

Crime is close to a rounding error - Andorra consistently ranks among the world's safest places; your risks are gravity and weather. Ski within grading, helmet up (rentals include them), and respect avalanche flags off-piste - Arcalís freeride demands transceivers and guides. Summer storms build fast over 2,500m ridges: start early, pack layers, and treat exposed passes seriously. The altitude (capital ~1,000m, skiing to 2,640m) deserves a hydration day if you arrive from sea level. Pharmacies are abundant; healthcare is excellent (EHIC does not apply - carry insurance). Culture & etiquette

Catalan is the official language (the world's only state with that honor) - Spanish and French work everywhere, but opening in Catalan earns instant warmth. Rhythms run Iberian: late lunches, later dinners (8:30pm onward), shops pausing midday outside the malls. Mountain etiquette is sacred - greet hikers ("Hola!/Bon dia!"), close gates, pack out everything. Dress is ski-resort casual; Caldea expects swim caps nowhere but flip-flops everywhere. Useful phrases: "Bon dia" (good day), "Gràcies" (thank you), "Si us plau" (please), "Quant costa?" (how much?), "Salut!" (cheers). Don't call it Spain or France - seven centuries of stubborn independence say otherwise.
