About Rwanda
Rwanda has authored one of the most remarkable national turnarounds in modern history, and travelers feel it the moment they land. Three decades after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi - a horror confronted with unflinching honesty at Kigali's deeply moving Genocide Memorial - this is now one of Africa's safest, cleanest and best-organized countries. Kigali is famously orderly and litter-free (single-use plastic bags are banned; the last Saturday of each month is a national community clean-up), a green city of hills, cafés and a genuine sense of forward motion that surprises every first-time visitor. The "land of a thousand hills" is gorgeous terrain, and its wildlife is world-class. The headline is the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park - trekking up bamboo-forested volcano slopes to sit, heart pounding, a few meters from a silverback and his family is one of the planet's great wildlife encounters (it's expensive, by design, to fund conservation that has brought these critically endangered apes back from the brink). Beyond them, Nyungwe Forest offers a vertiginous canopy walk and chimpanzee tracking; Akagera has been restored to a Big Five savanna park; and Lake Kivu's beaches and island-dotted calm provide the gentle counterpoint. The long dry seasons - June-September and December-February - are the best times for gorilla and chimp trekking, when forest trails are firmer and less muddy (though "dry" is relative in a rainforest - rain is always possible, and the gorillas are tracked year-round). The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) bring lush green, lower-season pricing and fewer trekkers, but slippery, demanding trails. Kigali's high-altitude climate is mild and spring-like all year (around 20-27°C). The Kwita Izina gorilla-naming ceremony (usually September) is a charming national event. Whenever you go, bring rain gear and good boots for the forests - and book gorilla permits well in advance, as daily numbers are strictly limited.

Getting around
Rwanda is small and its roads are among Africa's best-maintained, which makes getting around straightforward. Most visitors on a wildlife trip use a private driver-guide or a tour operator, which is efficient given the early-morning trek logistics and park distances (Kigali to Volcanoes NP is ~2-3h). Comfortable coach buses link the main towns cheaply for independent travelers, and shared minibuses cover shorter routes. Kigali has cheap moto-taxis (helmets provided - the legal way to zip around the hilly city) and ride-hailing apps (Move, Yego). For gorilla trekking you'll be assigned a group and guides at the park; a reasonable fitness level helps for the steep, muddy climbs. The country's order and infrastructure make logistics notably smoother than much of the region.
Money & connectivity
Rwanda uses the franc (RWF). Kigali is increasingly cashless and card/mobile-money friendly (cards work at hotels, restaurants and supermarkets in the capital), but carry francs for rural areas, markets, moto-taxis and smaller towns (ATMs in cities; some take foreign cards reliably). USD cash is useful for park fees and tips. Tipping guides and trackers is customary and appreciated (gorilla trackers especially). SIMs (MTN, Airtel) are cheap with good coverage in this compact country; mobile internet is solid. Wi-Fi is widespread in Kigali. Many nationalities get a visa on arrival or easy e-visa (and East Africa regional visas exist) - check yours. Gorilla permits are paid in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or your operator.
Health & safety
Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa for travelers - Kigali in particular feels secure, clean and orderly day and night, with very low crime and a strong rule-of-law culture. The practical considerations are health and trekking, not danger: take malaria precautions (it's present, especially at lower altitudes and Akagera; the high-altitude gorilla areas are lower-risk), bring yellow-fever vaccination (often required), drink bottled/filtered water, and be reasonably fit for the steep, muddy gorilla and forest treks (gaiters, boots, rain gear, gloves). Altitude is mild but real in Volcanoes NP. Medical care is decent in Kigali, limited rurally - insurance with evacuation is wise. Respect wildlife-distance rules absolutely (you must keep 7m+ from gorillas and stay healthy to trek). Emergency number: 112. Photography of government/military sites is restricted.

Culture & etiquette
Rwandans are reserved, dignified and courteous - politeness, modest dress and calm respect go a long way, and the orderly national culture (cleanliness, queuing, rules followed) is part of the recovery's pride. Greetings matter; take the time for them. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and at memorial sites, where quiet, respectful behavior is essential - the genocide is recent, personal and present; approach it with humility, listen, and never treat memorials as photo backdrops. Use the right hand or both hands for giving and receiving. Avoid the ethnic labels of the past - Rwandans today emphasize a shared national identity ("we are all Rwandans"); let locals lead any discussion of history. Useful phrases (Kinyarwanda): "Muraho" (hello), "Murakoze" (thank you), "Ni angahe?" (how much?), "Yego/Oya" (yes/no) - and English or French both work widely.
